Brazil is one of the most vibrant dance environments in the world. The music breathes pulses into the feet of pedestrians. The sun insulates positive energy and joy. The sinuous nature of the ocean saturates the movement of those possessed by the infectious sounds of samba. Dance is the physical manifestation and embodiment of history, culture, religion, community and happiness. Two of the most renowned dance epicenters of Brazil continue to train and perpetuate the country's intricate relationship with dance. Rio de Janeiro and Salvador da Bahia both provide accessible dance education and training to perpetuate their reputations as dance capitals of the world. This essay explores the integral relationship between community and dance; the atmospheres that nurture the development of dance study, and recounts the author's experience of being welcomed into these two dancing communities of Brazil.
