This essay will discuss the construction of gender among the Sambia of Papua New Guinea and the Bugis of South Sulawesi, Indonesia. It will use these examples to examine the concepts of gender dichotomy and gender continuum in order to understand the formation of gender identity. It will assert that we should embrace a view of gender which integrates various factors, including sexuality, into our conceptualization of gender identity, and move beyond a dichotomous conceptualization of gender.
