Scholars Day: April 11, 2012

Almost Involuntary

The presenter will discuss the portion of her thesis that considers the compositional methods of various choreographers. She investigates how certain successful choreographers choose to craft a dance. She explores the extent to which choreographers use compositional strategies rooted in modern dance history. She also seeks to discover to what extent do they use inspiration from choreographers that have influenced them? And, how plausible is it to suggest someone can come up with a truly original work without any influence from his or her predecessor? She will share a specific trail of choreographers that date from early 20th century to present day and habitual patterns that are shared from one dance composition to the next.

Please note that presentation times are approximate. If you are interested in attending sessions with multiple presentations, please be in the room at the start of the session.
