Urban youths' experiences shape their behaviors into what many teacher candidates tremble at the thought of—widespread behavioral problems. While urban students may have behavioral problems, they are not "bad" kids—there is no such thing. Poverty can wreck havoc upon a childhood, and the various facets of poverty can be seen in the behaviors of students. The circumstances adolescents face outside of school shapes the repetition of bad choices within school. Therefore, there are no "bad" children. Only children who make bad choices. Teachers need to remember that the behaviors within their classrooms were formed through their experience of their situation. Through the lens of poverty, violence and substance abuse, and experiences within a residential facility working with adolescents in the justice system, this presentation explores how the reality of juveniles' lives manifests in their behavioral problems within the school system.
