This presentation highlights the melodramatic conventions most common to superhero films (i.e. the suffering hero, the innocent female who winds up as the victim, and the centrality of family relationships) via close analysis of key scenes from The Amazing Spider-Man (2012, dir. Marc Webb). It will explain why this trend in modern superhero films has made them the successes they are, why they are popular among U.S. audiences, and why the majority of movie goers see them as some of the "better" films.
