Brockport / Scholars Day / 2014 / Schedule

Scholars Day: April 9, 2014

Peru International Health Experience

In today's increasingly interconnected world there are a multitude of opportunities to bring health care to poor underserved populations who lack access to services. An interdisciplinary group of Brockport students partnered with Sacred Valley Health to participate in health campaigns in Ollantaytambo, Peru. The group worked in several remote communities in the Andes Mountains. At these locations, the students performed physical examinations and valuable gathered health data on the communities they visited. Students also worked alongside prominent community members to teach the younger generation about the importance of hygiene, sexual and reproductive health, dental hygiene and choosing foods to eliminate nutritional deficiencies. Poverty continues to contribute to poor health, and poor health anchors large populations in poverty around the world. Health development projects, like these that Brockport participated in, attempts to break that cycle.
