Ionic liquids (ILs) are defined as salts that are stable in the liquid state at 100°C or less. ILs have long been considered as designer solvents in preparatory chemistry because they can be made task-specific for a target application. We will present on the synthesis of imidazolium based ILs tailored for two different tasks: a) ILs with chiral functional groups for the potential use in enantioselective synthesis and b) ILs containing isotopically enriched carbon atoms for physicochemical studies of IL aggregation. The presentation will include discussion of the underlying reaction schemes, as well as synthesis and purification details.
