The Brockport Shuttle Bus Application project allows students at The College at Brockport an easier way to view bus stops and schedule times, rather than reading online PDF files. Our approach is to create a mobile app. Each bus contains an android phone to run an app that tracks the bus’ location (GPS coordinates), direction of travel, speed, and current time and reports this information to the college’s web server. A web application on the server decodes this information and plots the location of the shuttle bus on a Google map. Students are then able to see exactly where a bus is located from either a computer or cell phone and plan on reaching their stop at their own convenience. The project is a collaborative effort of the Department of Computer Science and LITS. The app is currently undergoing extensive usability testing and is expected to go live in late Spring 2014.
