A Comparison of Two Approaches for Solving the Navier-Stokes Equations Via

For problems in computational fluid mechanics, the P1-bubble-P1 finite element pair is an alternative to the more common P2-iso-P1finite element pair. The former discretization gives rise to cubic bubble unknowns in the velocity components which are typically eliminated from the linear systems during the matrix assembly stage. A comparison of the numerical properties and solvability of the linear systems that arise when the bubble unknowns are retained in the system versus when they are eliminated will be presented.
