Shedding Light in Your Closet: Coming Out in Today's Society

"Coming out" in todayís society is a challenging, emotional, and an often frightful experience. Gay youth must face challenges from society, their family, as well as battle gender role conflicts and stereotypes. Coming out often means a re-development of the individualís identity, self -perception, and view on society. This session will examine several factors related to the coming out process. Through an evidence-based discussion of the various theories related to the coming out process, this session aims to provide both a theoretical and practical perspective. The presenter will provide strategies to cope with reactions to coming out, and will identify valuable local support networks and resources within the Greater Rochester community.
