Resting in Peace: The Representation of Death in Selected African Films

Paradoxically, death can often be an opportunity for rebirth or for the development and growth of something new. Looking at two African films - Yaaba and Mapantsula - this paper explores the way death appears both as loss and tragedy, as well as an opening for growth. Significantly, we see that death ends up not being an individual phenomenon, but something that holds great significance for an entire community.
