The Cells are Full: Communal Consciousness and African Film

African filmmakers are closely attuned to the traditional African emphasis on a communal identity and a communal consciousness. In both Mapantsula and Yaaba we see how a communal identity is central in the African context, how African filmmakers criticize its excesses, and yet how they ultimately celebrate its potential.
