Analysis of the Content of Electronic Discussion Group Messages

Online listservís have become a widely used medium that allows people with similar interests or background to converse with each other. Since they have become such a widely used form of communication, it merits study. This study examines the nature of electronic discussion group contributions. Specifically, the type of postings most commonly discussed. The listserv being examined is Behav-An, a forum for those in the behavioral community to express their views and opinions. It consists of approximately 1400 users. Permission to use archived postings is asked of members of the online community. Results show that questions and/or comments related to the listserv and information seeking are popular topics of discussion and that there is a specific time period where discussion is heavy.
