“Where immortal spirits reign, there we shall meet again": A Photographic Essay on the Victorian Understanding of Life, Death, and Immorality

Symbols and inscriptions on headstones express views of life, death, and immortality; notions of worth and value; notions of life and memory. This photographic “tour” of Rochester’s Mt Hope Cemetery examines funerary iconography and epigraphy and its connections to Victorian conceptions of life, death and immortality as expressed by the famous and the not-so-famous residents of the City of Rochester.
