Embracing the Uncharted Cavern: Fostering Community Dance

Many small dance companies desire to offer effective community programs, yet have limited resources such as time, money, manpower, or education to do so. Coupling the needs and resources of the community, with the needs and resources of the dance company, can expose extraordinary terrain. In this multi-media presentation, M.F.A. Candidate Kate Jordan shares her experience creating and executing a community program for 7Dance Company, a Philadelphia based company. The 8-week program exposes 7Dance Company’s urban neighborhood to modern dance through live performances, open-studio days, and a student workshop series. The research reveals the positive results building a strong community base can foster in a new dance company. (
