As of 2/21/10
The College at Brockport’s Special Events Recreation Center (SERC) will be a state-of-the-art, multi-use facility supporting our first-class academic programs. It will also provide our students with enhanced recreational and athletic facilities and become a wonderful venue for campus concerts, sporting events, commencements and community activities. Groundbreaking is scheduled for April 16, 2010, at 1 pm.
The SERC is an approximate 138,000 square foot addition to the Tuttle North Physical Education facility located on the campus of The College at Brockport. The project creates a comprehensive special events, recreation, athletic and learning environment with an attractive community hub for students, faculty, staff and visitors alike. The large SERC addition reorganizes and reinvigorates the entire Tuttle complex, has a clear image, provides a primary entry, promotes social/physical interaction and creates a student and visitor friendly social-education environment. Serving a combination of student recreation, physical education and athletics needs, three major program groups comprise the SERC; the Event Center/“House of Fields,” Fitness/Wellness Areas and Support Areas.
The Event Center/“House of Fields” is a 60,000 square foot multi-purpose high ceiling space capable of hosting a variety of events ranging from speakers, concerts and commencement ceremonies, to national NCAA track and field events. The facility provides 3,650 retractable/fixed seats and, with portable chairs on the floor, will provide capacity to accommodate 5,500 attendees for special events. The SERC configuration is based around a 200 meter track with lanes wide enough to accommodate disabled athletes and with the ability to be subdivided into three large field areas for multiple and concurrent athletic, physical education and recreation purposes.
State-of-the-art Fitness/Wellness components comprise cardiovascular, free weights and strength circuit training areas and a multi-purpose exercise room.
Support Areas for special events include a concessions area and ticket sales windows. The driveway south of the House of Fields accommodates semi-truck event loading and staging; box truck loading is also capable to the west. Athletic training and storage spaces line the west length of the House of Fields, providing access to storage at each of the three field areas. An A/V booth overlooks the track from the Fitness Level.
A connecting gallery along the south of the existing Tuttle gymnasium facility will correct a glaring existing circulation shortfall: it will link east and west ends of the facility and provide direct SERC access to existing and relocated parking lots flanking the facility. The connector links on multiple levels. At the lower ice rink level (+100’-0”) the connector is a tunnel between Tuttle North and the SERC providing direct access from the Tuttle locker rooms to the track. Restrooms are located in this back-of house space. Above the sheltered, but not conditioned connector, links the main level of Tuttle North and the intermediate level of the SERC, eliminating the need to cross active gym spaces. At this main level, the connector extends east to a new elevator connecting all levels of Tuttle North and South.
The SERC is designed and will be constructed with sustainable design principals with a goal of providing a certifiable LEED silver rating addition.
When completed, the SERC will be the crown jewel of The College at Brockport and have regional impact as an event and athletic center. It will be a building of life and vitality portrayed through the movement of people, placement of lounges, and use of color and natural light.
