Travel, Serve, Learn: Team Memphis Winter 2012

This WinterSession 2012 service learning opportunity is a collaboration between the Division of Academic Affairs and the Division of Enrollment Management & Student Affairs at The College at Brockport.

CMC 211: Protest and Public Opinion

This WinterSession 2012 course will include classroom segments at Brockport, plus an 9-day, 8-night field experience in Memphis, Tennessee where students will attend classroom sessions and take field trips related to the course.  While in Memphis students will also perform service work on the Zion Cemetery Project, helping to reclaim an abandoned 16-acre Black cemetery that contains 23,000 graves, some of them former slaves.  The field trips will include Civil Rights sites in Memphis.

We will cap off our academic experience by visiting the site of Martin Luther King's final speech, the National Civil Rights museum at the Lorraine Motel where Dr. King was assassinated and by observing Martin Luther King Day in Memphis.  There will also be an opportunity for students to spend some time exploring Memphis.
