Frequently Asked SOS Questions:

  • What is SOS?
    • On Saturday, August 24, 2013, new first-year and transfer students will go out in to the local community to complete approximately 2 hours of community service before their first day of class at The College at Brockport.
  • When can I sign up?
    • SOS sign-up occurs during Summer Orientation.
  • What do I need to sign-up?
    • You will need your Brockport email address (netID) and Student ID (Banner) number in order to sign up. Click here if you do not know that information.
  • When will I know more information for the event?
    • You will receive more information regarding your SOS project along with your transportation information prior to Welcome Week. Stay tuned to your Brockport email!
  • What if I have a conflict during SOS? What if I am a Fall athlete?
    • Saturday of Service is a mandatory event for all freshmen. If you have a conflict, send an email to serve@brockport.edu. If you are a Fall athlete, talk to your coach to see if you have a scrimage.
  • What if I need special accommodations?
    • If you need any special accommodations please feel free to email us or call The Office of Community Development at 585-395-5245.  We work closely with the Office for Students with Disabilities to accommodate any special needs.
  • I am not a freshmen or transfer, but I want to be a part of SOS. Can I get involved?

Advent House - TRANSFERS ONLY

Advent House is a non-profit outreach ministry of thirteen churches in Perinton. These churches are comfort care homes that provide alternative living arrangements to the terminally ill when they can no longer be cared for in their own homes.Students will assist with the Advent House Garage Sale – a fundraising event. An email will be sent out prior to Welcome Week with instructions on the project and transportation details.


Cameron Community Ministries – TRANSFERS ONLY

Cameron Community Ministries is an urban community center located in the Lyell-Otis neighborhood of Rochester. Students will assist with sorting donations and preparing classrooms for the upcoming academic year. An email will be sent out prior to Welcome Week with instructions on the project and transportation details.


Christ Community Church – TRANSFERS ONLY

Christ Community Church is a New Testament Full Gospel church firmly founded upon God's Word, the Bible. Students will participate in a variety of beautification projects. An email will be sent out prior to Welcome Week with instructions on the project and transportation details.


Town of Hamlin Recreation Department – Painting – TRANSFERS ONLY

The Town of Hamlin Recreation Department believes in the philosophy of offering quality recreational and educational activities to the Hamlin Community at an affordable and reasonable cost. Students will paint in preparation for Halloween events. An email will be sent out prior to Welcome Week with instructions on the project and transportation details.


Registration Closed - The Schoolhouse of Brockport – TRANSFERS ONLY  - Registration Closed

The Schoolhouse is a full-time preschool. It is part of Brockport Central Schools' Universal Pre-Kindergarten Program (UPK), which focuses upon life skills, socialization, and Kindergarten readiness in a structured and active setting. Students will assist by organizing and preparing classrooms for the upcoming academic year. Registration Closed - Camp Good Days & Special Times  - Registration Closed

Camp Good Days is dedicated to improving the quality of life for children, adults and families whose lives have been touched by cancer and other challenges. Registration Closed -   Arnett Branch Library   - Registration Closed

The Arnett Branch Library is a member of the Monroe County Library System. Students will help paint different areas of the Library. An email will be sent out prior to Welcome Week with instructions on the project and transportation details.


Registration Closed -  Mercy Community Services - Registration Closed

Mercy Community Services, a ministry of the Sisters of Mercy, works with underserved individuals and families—independent of religious affiliation—providing supportive environments and services with compassion and acceptance. Students will assist in sorting donations for the "Baby Boutique.” An email will be sent out prior to Welcome Week with instructions on the project and transportation details.


Registration Closed  - CURE Childhood Cancer Association  - Registration Closed

CURE Childhood Cancer Association was formed in Rochester, NY in 1976 by a group of parents who lost their children to cancer in an effort to provide support to parents going through the same experience, as well as to raise money for cancer research. Students will assist in outdoor and indoor beautification projects. An email will be sent out prior to Welcome Week with instructions on the project and transportation details.

The Town of Hamlin Recreation Department believes in the philosophy of offering quality recreational and educational activities to the Hamlin Community at an affordable and reasonable cost. Registration Closed - Lifetime Assistance, Inc – Pine Valley  - Registration Closed

Lifetime Assistance offers a full spectrum of services to empower individuals with developmental disabilities to achieve their full potential and to promote inclusion in the community. Students will assist in a tie-dye event for the residents of the house. An email will be sent out prior to Welcome Week with instructions on the project and transportation details.


Registration Closed -  Village of Brockport Parks Committee  - Registration Closed

The Village of Brockport provides safe spaces for residents to enjoy the outdoors. Students will assist with various beautification projects of parks within the village. An email will be sent out prior to Welcome Week with instructions on the project and transportation details.


Registration Closed - Rochester Public Library - Rundel Memorial Library   - Registration Closed

The Rundel Memorial Library building was constructed in 1933, and has served as the Central Library of Rochester and Monroe County since the 1950's. Over 55,000 patrons come through its doors each month. Students will assist in a substantial cleaning effort to refresh the auditorium. Registration Closed -   Epilepsy Foundation of Rochester Syracuse & Binghamton   - Registration Closed

The Epilepsy Foundation of Rochester-Syracuse-Binghamton’s mission is to stop seizures and SUDEP, find a cure and overcome the challenges created by epilepsy through efforts including education, advocacy and research to accelerate ideas into therapies. Registration Closed - Community Lutheran Ministry  - Registration Closed

Community Lutheran is an outreach ministry in northeast Rochester, which provides hope to children and families living in the most economically disadvantaged area of the city. Students will assist with the “Outdoor Bash” for back-to-school rally for families and for children ages 3-14. There will be games, music, and food. Registration Closed - Mt. Carmel Church

Student will assist with the Community Outreach Day, a Community Fair to inform Rochester residents of available resources regarding employment, finances, and medical questions. An email will be sent out prior to Welcome Week with instructions on the project and transportation details.


Registration Closed -   ConKerr Cancer   - Registration Closed

From California to Massachusetts, Florida to Michigan, the UK to Africa, ConKerr Cancer pillowcases are bringing HUGE smiles and hugs to children with life threatening illnesses. Students will assist in making pillowcases for the patients of the Golisano Children’s Hospital at Strong. Located in the basement of the St. Luke Episcopal Church, the Brockport Clothing Center provides clothing to individuals in need within the Brockport community. Registration Closed - Henrietta Public Library   - Registration Closed

Henrietta Public Library: “where our community connects, discovers, and learns.” Students will assist with beautification projects and they will read to school aged children. An email will be sent out prior to Welcome Week with instructions on the project and transportation details.


Registration Closed - First Community Interfaith Institute Inc.

The creator of Doology teaches that positive action in one’s community and/or organization is valued more than just complaining. Students will assist with the recycling program. In addition, students will pass out flyers promoting the Uhuru Week program on the evening of Aug 24 as well as help to reorganizing the children's library. Registration Closed - Greece Residents Assisting Stray Pets  - Registration Closed

GRASP (Greece Residents Assisting Stray Pets) is a non-profit animal rescue operation that finds permanent homes for stray dogs and cats. Fundraisers help secure money for veterinarian expenses and foster care. Students will assist with a Hotdog Sale fundraiser to help support the mission of GRASP. Bergen United Methodist Church

Jubilee Christian Church

Jubilee is a Christian ministry devoted to sharing the good news of Jesus Christ with many people in the local community, city and state. Students will assist with outdoor beautification projects. Registration Closed - House of Mercy  - Registration Closed

The House of Mercy provides a wide range of valuable services to more than 4,000 homeless people per month. Students will help create personal hygiene kits for those in need and they will organize donated items. Registration Closed -  Mary Cariola Children's Center  - Registration Closed

Founded in 1949 in Rochester, NY, Mary Cariola Children’s Center serves children with multiple, complex disabilities when public and private schools are no longer able to accommodate these children’s needs. Seymour Library is a public library that serves the residents of Brockport, Clarkson, and Sweden. Students will assist with beautification projects at the Library. An email will be sent out prior to Welcome Week with instructions on the project and transportation details.


First Baptist Church of Brockport

The First Baptist Church of Brockport is a mid-sized family church in downtown Brockport. Students will assist with outdoor and indoor beautification projects. An email will be sent out prior to Welcome Week with instructions on the project and transportation details.


Registration Closed - Brockport Fire Department  - Registration Closed

The Brockport Fire Department is a volunteer fire protection agency serving the Village of Brockport, Town of Clarkson, and the Town of Sweden. Students will assist with beautification projects at the Department’s four fire stations. Mission Share provides food throughout the entire year, with special deliveries of complete Thanksgiving dinners. Other services we provide are: the Clothing Closet, Christmas Outreach which provides presents to children of incarcerated individuals, and the Back-to-School Outreach which assists the residents of Greece with the support of 13 area residents. The Greece Baptist Church is an active church with programs and activities for individuals of all ages, lots of learning experiences, service projects, and fellowship opportunities. The Seneca Park Zoo provides engaging educational experiences to give members of the community the motivation and skill set needed to act as stewards of the environment. Registration Closed - Hamlin Beach State Park – NYOPRHP  - Registration Closed

Hamlin Beach State Park's clear water, sandy beaches and 264 tent and trailer campsites bring thousands of visitors to the park each year. The Yanty Creek Marsh area at the east end of the park has a mile long self-guided nature trail. Students will assist with the Yanty Creek Marsh Trail Beautification Project. Registration Closed - Sisters of St. Joseph of Rochester

The Sisters of Saint Joseph of Rochester is a community of over 250 Roman Catholic women. Beyond the congregation, the church community numbers over 100 associates, countless supporters and friends. The Society is a non-profit volunteer organization that operates and maintains the collections of the Fairport Museum at 18 Perrin Street in the Village of Fairport. Founded by ten individuals in 1935, the Society began as a research organization and incorporated in 1937. Students will assist with indoor beautification projects at the Fairport Historical Museum. Greece Volunteer Ambulance, Inc. is a service to the community of Greece that has been reaching out from neighbor to neighbor for 50 years. GVA has both volunteers and professional staff working together to serve the local community. Students will assist with indoor and outdoor beautification projects. Volunteers of America’s Community Outreach Programs meet the most basic needs of individuals who lack the means to provide for themselves, while empowering them with the tools they need to become self-sufficient. Students will assist with a Family Day for the residents of the Guest House (games, activities, crafts, picnic). Located in New York's western Monroe County, the Town of Sweden offers a blend of rural beauty, access to the Erie Canal, the Village of Brockport, and some of the best shopping in the area. First Presbyterian Church of Holley

In Holley, New York you will see evidence that the church is playing it big – big in their faith, big in their community, big in the lives of their church family and big in the ways of peace, love and justice. Child Care Council, Inc. is a non-profit child care resource and referral corporation dedicated to the support of high quality early child-care and education. Child Care Council provides information, education, support and resources to childcare providers, parents, and the community. Students will assist with administrative tasks. Newman Catholic Campus Ministry

The Newman Catholic Campus Ministry is a Roman Catholic ministry of the Diocese of Rochester located in a beautiful building on the edge of campus. It has a large, contemporary worship space, a small chapel, offices, meeting spaces/classrooms and Newman House--a student residence is next door. Registration Closed -   Volunteers of America – Brockport Retail Store - Registration Closed  

Volunteers of America help the most vulnerable and underserved people achieve their full potential. The retail store helps to provide the funding needed to support the mission of the Volunteers of America. Students will assist store operations, move furniture, provide customer service, and other tasks as a deemed necessary. While Ronald McDonald House Charities® cannot make medicine taste better or take away painful treatments, we can help lessen the burden and ensure families have the stability and resources to keep their child healthy and happy. Registration Closed - Wilson Commencement Park

Wilson Commencement Park was established in 1991 by the Board of Directors of the Marie C. and Joseph C. Wilson Foundation. They envisioned an attractive, affordable and secure residential community where single parents from the lowest income areas of Rochester could finish high school, receive vocational training, find employment and learn important life skills to become financially independent and self-sufficient. Registration Closed - Aurora House of Western Monroe County

Aurora House is a two-bed comfort care home for the dying. Our caregivers, with the support and guidance of nurses, provide loving and compassionate care based on the model of families caring for loved ones at home. We believe that healing, well-being, and positive development can be achieved even in the setting of a devastating disease. Students will assist with indoor and outdoor beautification projects. The Friends of Hamlin Beach State Park objective is to support the preservation, conservation, improvements, and the development of Hamlin Beach State park and the CCC/POW Camp located on State Park Property. The Ridge Culver Fire Department, established in 1921 and located in Irondequoit New York, is dedicated to protect the district residents and property from any sudden emergency. Inspire! Learning & Childcare

Trusted and dedicated to the education, development and care of your child throughout the Monroe County and the Rochester NY area for nearly 30 years. INSPIRE! Learning and Childcare provides year-round, Monday through Friday, childcare and learning services for children ages 6 weeks to 12 years.  Students will assist with indoor beautification projects.  An email will be sent out prior to Welcome Week with instructions on the project and transportation details.


Registration Closed - Rochester Area Interfaith Hospitality Network

The Rochester Area Interfaith Hospitality Network is a not-for-profit, interfaith, culturally-competent organization of faith communities that assists homeless families to achieve sustainable independence by supporting them with tailored services including shelter, food, personalized case management, and a diverse network of caring volunteers. Cornerstone Christian Academy

Cornerstone Christian Academy is a co-educational, college preparatory school established in 1983.  It is the mission of Cornerstone Christian Academy to serve the Christian community of western Monroe, eastern Orleans and northern Genesee counties. Students will assist by organizing and preparing classrooms for the upcoming academic year. Founded in 1912 as the City of Rochester, New York's Municipal Museum, the Rochester Museum & Science Center (RMSC) has grown from a City-funded agency into a unique public/private partnership with the County of Monroe. Mt. Hope Cemetery-A

Mount Hope Cemetery, one of the most remarkable Victorian cemeteries in America, is a magnificent 196 acres of lofty hills and picturesque valleys created by glaciers and transformed into a beautiful historic cemetery. Life solutions of Hamlin, Inc. provide assistance year round to Hamlin residents in need of food distribution. Located at 1696 Lake Road, Life Solutions also provides counseling services and referrals to other agencies as needed.  Students will assist with indoor beautification projects.  An email will be sent out prior to Welcome Week with instructions on the project and transportation details.


Orleans Cornell Cooperative Extension

Cornell Cooperative Extension is a community-based, not-for-profit educational organization created by New York State Law as a subordinate form of government.  An elected, volunteer board of directors governs the organization and helps to identify local needs, prioritizes educational programs, and works with Extension’s educational staff to ensure program effectiveness. The mission at Recovery Houses of Rochester is twofold: One to provide a safe living environment for those who are recovering from alcohol and/or drug addiction. Two, to encourage those who want to change and improve the quality of their lives. Students will assist with indoor and outdoor beautification projects. The Community Place of Greater Rochester

The Community Place of Greater Rochester is a neighborhood based organization that meets the needs of people where they live. We are a trusted resource that helps all generations to achieve the dreams they have for themselves and their community. Students will assist with beautification of the organizations vehicle fleet. Off Campus Relations Team

Come strengthen our Brockport community by meeting local residents and sharing helpful information! Students will work alongside local Brockport officials, landlords and campus leadership in an effort to educate, enhance town/gown relationships and disseminate helpful information related to campus services and resources.  This service initiative will create an opportunity for students to engage with families, agencies and local businesses in a positive manner.  An email will be sent out prior to Welcome Week with instructions on the project and transportation details.


The Community Place of Greater Rochester - B

The Community Place of Greater Rochester is a neighborhood based organization that meets the needs of people where they live. Trinity Inter-Faith Church, Inc.

Registration Closed - Foodlink

Foodlink is the Feeding America regional food bank, which rescues and redistributes more than 13 million pounds of food annually to a network of 450 member agencies in a 10-county service area: Allegany, Genesee, Livingston, Monroe, Ontario, Orleans, Seneca, Wayne, Wyoming, and Yates Counties.  Students will work with Foodlink to sort food donations and prepare them for shipment. The H.O.R.S.E. Rescue at Do Over Acres

The H.O.R.S.E. Rescue at Do Over Acres is dedicated to rehabilitating abandoned, abused and neglected horses. Our mission is to provide education and experience to the public about horses and how a relationship like no other can be earned through trust. George Eastman House

The George Eastman House is the world's oldest museum dedicated to photography and one of the world's oldest film archives, opened to the public in 1949 in Rochester, New York, USA.
