Department of Sociology

Requirements for the Sociology Major

The sociology major requires students to earn 33 credits in sociology and complete all general College requirements leading to the BA or BS degree.

Core Courses (15 credits)

Students must complete 15 core credits in sociology.

  • SOC 100 Introduction to Sociology (3 credits)
  • One of the following courses must be taken at Brockport:
    • SOC 210 Social Problems (3 credits)
    • SOC 220 Introduction to Social Psychology (3 credits)
    • SOC 230 Social Institutions (3 credits)
  • SOC 200 Social Statistics (3 credits)*
    • NOTE – If another statistics course is substituted for SOC 200, students must complete 21 credits of sociology electives.
  • SOC 300 Sociological Theory (3 credits)*
  • SOC 310 Methods of Sociological Research (3 credits)*

*Students must earn a grade of "C" or higher in SOC 200 (or another approved statistics course), SOC 300, and SOC 310 for these courses to satisfy the core requirement for the major.

Elective Courses (18 credits)

Students must also complete 18 credits of electives in sociology.

Electives should be chosen based on student interest and career goals, in consultation with your sociology advisor. See the online course schedule for a listing of current sociology offerings.
