2011 Summer Reading Program,
EMERGENCE: Labeled Autistic by Temple Grandin, PhD
ART CONTEST
“Creativity—doing something with my hands or imagination—was the beat I heard.” Grandin, p. 43.

The Summer Reading Program encourages all students in the 2011 class to create a small-scale artwork inspired by Temple Grandin’s book, EMERGENCE: Labeled Autistic.  Submissions will be displayed in a fall semester exhibition in the Drake Memorial Library and one artwork will be selected as “The Best of Show.”  The winner will be invited to have lunch with the author on Wednesday, September 28, 2011 and will be awarded a $100 gift certificate to Barnes and Noble bookstore.

Grandin includes numerous descriptive passages in her book EMERGENCE: Labeled Autistic.  These passages illustrate for the reader the symptoms and characteristics of the developmental disorder of autism.  The author describes these characteristics through recounting of specific personal sensitivities and fixations that she faced during her life.  Other passages describe actions, coping skills, and mechanisms she developed to deal with her anxiety and other sensory sensitivities.  Select a descriptive passage from the book and create a work of art based on your excerpt.  Your work of art may be a visual illustration, an interpretation, or an abstraction of the information contained within your selection.
For Example: “Whatever the reason, I enjoyed twirling myself around or spinning coins or lids round and round and round.” (p.26) This quote could be interpreted through a constructed digital image such as the artwork below.  Use your imagination; the possibilities are endless!

Consider the following possibilities:
Two-dimensional image making techniques: drawing, painting, collage, digital art, comics, doodling, etc.
Three-dimensional object making techniques: small-scale construction, sculpture, etc.
