Summer Reading Program
Essay Contest

Cover ImageThe Summer Reading Program is sponsoring an essay writing contest for the 2008 freshman class.  All first year students are eligible to submit essays.  Essays will be read and evaluated by members of the Summer Reading Program committee. The winner of the contest will be invited to have lunch with Clea Koff, author of The Bone Woman, on Tuesday, September 23, 2008 and will be given a $100 gift certificate to Barnes & Noble bookstore.

Essay Question

Throughout the Bone Woman, Koff discusses her meticulous examination of the victims of genocide.  For Koff, it is as important to measure, label, and analyze bones as it is to gently peel away the layers of simple artifacts such as clothing and personal possessions in order to reconstruct the identities of the dead.  How does Koff’s narrative thread the scientific with the deeply personal in a way that humanizes the dead and ultimately restores identity?  In a two to three page essay, discuss how Koff brings together her knowledge of forensic anthropology with her humanitarian efforts and the ways in which her readers are challenged to do the same.
