Summer Reading Program
Essay Contest

Cover ImageThe Summer Reading Program Committee is sponsoring an essay writing contest for the 2011 freshman class.  All first year students are eligible to submit essays.  Essays will be read and evaluated by members of the Summer Reading Program Committee. The winner of the contest will be invited to have lunch with Temple Grandin, author of Emergence: Labeled Autistic on Wednesday, September 28, 2011 and will be given a $100 gift certificate to Barnes & Noble bookstore.

Essay Question
Temple Grandin believes that some of the characteristics that many people with autism possess are in fact abilities, not disabilities: “In an ideal world the scientist should find a method to prevent the most severe forms of autism but allow the milder forms to survive. After all, the really social people did not invent the first stone spear. It was probably invented by an Aspie who chipped away at rocks while the other people socialized around the campfire. Without autism traits we might still be living in caves" (Thinking in Pictures, Expanded Edition: My Life with Autism, 2006).    Do you agree with this statement?  Explain why or why not using specific examples from Emergence, other credible sources, and/or personal experience.  Be sure to cite your sources.
