CMC 211.21 (Protest and Public Opinion), "Team Memphis" January 2 - 22, 2013 3 Undergraduate Credits |
Our WinterSession Protest & Public Opinion course explores the rhetoric of protest and the history of protest movements in Tennessee and Mississippi. In addition to classroom work in Brockport, this course will include a 9 day/8 night trip to Memphis, TN. The class will visit famous and not-so-famous historic sites from the Civil Rights Movement, including the location of Martin Luther King Jr.’s final speech and The International Civil Rights Museum at the Lorraine Motel where Dr. King was assassinated. While in Memphis, we will work on a reclamation service project at the Zion Cemetery, a 16 acre Black cemetery that has suffered from decades of neglect, vandalism and destruction. During our Memphis stay, we will also meet veterans of the Civil Rights Movement. We will conclude our trip to Memphis on Martin Luther King Jr. Day with commemorations of Dr. King’s life and accomplishments. This course is an ideal opportunity to add extra meaning to your life learning. Departmental approval is required before registering.
