TRIO Student Support Services Program
Academics

A picture of the Academic Coordinator working with a student.SSSP provides support to help students overcome challenges and obstacles that can arise throughout an academic career at SUNY Brockport.  Our academic services are designed to help you develop effective study skills and succeed with your course work.

 Academic services include:

Advisement

The Academic Coordinator (AC) can assist you with almost all aspects of your academic career, including choosing courses for each semester, adding or dropping courses, reviewing your academic records, withdrawal from classes (or from the College if necessary), applying for internships, and most other academic concerns. SUNY College assigns an advisor to each incoming student either through the Academic Planning Seminar or through each academic department; however, SSSP participants can always make an appointment to meet with the Academic Coordinator to discuss advisement issues.

Study-skills Workshops

Throughout each semester, TRIO SSSP offers several informal workshops covering a variety of helpful study-skills topics.  A few examples are:

Time Management - based on  your college schedule.

Textbook Reading - to improve your reading comprehension.

Note-taking Skills - correlating notes and reading.

Test-taking Skills - ways to prepare for exams  and lower your test anxiety.

All our workshops focus on yourspecific skills.

Peer TutoringPicture: Students and tutors studying together.

TRIO SSSP offers one-to-one peer tutoring to all eligible students for all classes. A peer tutor is usually a junior, senior, or graduate  student who has completed the same course you are taking or has a good knowledge of the material and the instructor.  Tutors can help a student grasp key concepts from the text or notes,  review for a test, or prepare for a major essay.

Applying for a tutor is easy: Come to the SSSP office, fill out a one-page form, and meet with the AC for a few minutes.  You will be contacted by a tutor within a week, and then you and the tutor will meet to set a weekly tutoring appointment based on your schedule.

The TRIO SSSP staff will also work with students on writing assignments.  We will help with planning, outlining, revising and proofreading, but we require appointments.
