President Yu Joins Area Boards
|
||||
|
President Paul Yu has been named to the Board of three regional
organizations, namely the George Eastman House International Museum
of Photography, the Rochester Philharmonic
Orchestra, and the Greater Rochester Metro
Chamber of Commerce.
"Joining the boards of important cultural and business organizations means considerably more to me than merely doing a civic duty and fulfilling my leadership role as College president; I have a deep-seated passion for community service and have been blessed with the unique opportunity to fulfill that passion. At SUNY Brockport, we are dedicated to building a better community that fosters integrity, civility and justice. The time I spend serving these organizations as a board member is one way I can live the principles by which our College abides," said Yu about his appointments. As a member of the Board of Trustees of the George Eastman House,
Dr. Yu, along with his fellow Board members, will be responsible for the
development of all policies, standards, conditions, and operational continuity
|
of the Museum; trustees must devote generous time and attention to the
affairs of the institution and ensure that the Museum acts in accordance with
applicable state and federal laws.
As a member of the Board of Directors for the RPO, Yu will assist the orchestra in achieving its mission to awaken, nurture and fulfill a profound sense of the beauty and power of music in the hearts and minds of all people by integrating the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra as a human force into the cultural and educational life of the community. The Greater Rochester Metro Chamber of Commerce, which "strives
to meet the needs of industry and commerce," welcomed Paul Yu to its
Board this spring, where he will assist it in its many projects to "create and
sustain the process through which business interests and resources can be
channeled to support the economic vitality and growth of the Rochester region."
Among the Chamber's many current projects, Yu is particularly interested
in the new proposed Performing Arts Center, International Business
Council and, not surprisingly, the John M. Summers Faculty Residency in the
Workplace program, a unique partnership between the Brockport College
Foundation and the Chamber of Commerce.

Adieu, deans | ||||
|
Thank you and best wishes to Dean Ginny
Studer and Dean Robert McLean for their many years of
distinguished service.
Through the years, Studer provided tremendous strength and unflagging support for the arts and performance programs at Brockport, inspiring many to pursue excellence. Since 1971, when she first came to SUNY Brockport to teach in the Department of Physical Education and Sport, through her time as associate vice president for academic affairs, her tenure as Faculty Senate president, and the 13 years she served as dean, she has led by example, giving her all with enthusiasm as an educator, administrator, and ambassador to the world of athletics and the arts. She has played a prominent role in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), a national honor she earned for her expertise in the philosophy of sport and for her ability to apply that philosophy to the classroom and athletic arenas. Her commitment to the Summer Arts Festival has been a significant contribution to the community well beyond this campus, resulting in the 1987 Arts for Greater Rochester Certificate to the School of Arts and Performance "in recognition of and appreciation for significant contributions to the artistic and cultural life of the greater Rochester community." |
Congratulations and a fond farewell to Bob McLean, too. Academic
excellence has been the hallmark of McLean's 30-year career at
SUNY Brockport, whether as dean or interim vice president for academic affairs,
as well as through his support for and leadership in the founding and
growth of Scholars Day. Even as he looks for
ward to retirement, he can look back with pride at the growth and
innovation he has helped the College achieve in the School of Letters and Sciences.
A biologist by discipline, he has fostered the evolution of distinctive programs
in biological sciences, including the recent medical technology program;
but he has just as willingly supported excellence in humane letters,
encouraging the Writers Forum and the Washington Semester alike to excel.
Editor's note: A campus-wide retirement reception honoring Bob McLean will be held on Tuesday, May 19, from 3:30 to 5 pm in the Gallery Restaurant. At Ginny Studer's request, no retirement open house will be held; colleagues and friends will be celebrating with her in various gatherings this spring. | |||
