Construction - the saga continues | |

The Hartwell Hall renovation, with an estimated price tag of
$10,286,000, has entered Phase II with LeChase as the principal contractor and
Bill McGorrey, facilities administration, project coordinator. Neff Hall
has been demolished. Structural framing for theater seating in the
auditorium has been installed. Ninety percent of the metal stud framing has
been installed. Drywall installation is 75 percent complete. Ceiling
grid
installation is 30 percent complete. Eighty percent of the electrical
rough-ins is complete. HVAC unit is in place and 80 percent of the tie-ins
have been made. Floor patching and prep has started for vinyl tile installation.
Black walnut woodwork (which was salvaged prior to the abatement)
is being installed. Doors and hardware are 20 percent complete.
Alterations for safety/ADA compliance on the pedestrian bridge continue with Pike General Contracting. Structural elements are completed. Windows have been removed to accommodate replacement with tempered glass. Interior painting is 60 percent complete. Interior lighting is 80 percent complete, the metal roof is 90 percent complete. Work remaining to be completed includes: concrete topping, brick pavers, installation of glass, brick veneer at north piers and site restoration. | |

Many faculty and staff routinely talk to, write, receive e-mail, etc., from former students whom they had in their classes, advised, whatever. Sometimes you meet casually, some times at a conference. If you come in contact with alumni and come across news about a job change, new address, etc., please forward the information to Lynne Conradt, college advancement, 3rd Floor, Allen Building, x5128, so that the alumni database can continue to be updated. |

In the spirit of promoting excellence and honoring SUNY Brockport's best students, this year the Faculty Senate General Education Committee inaugurated The General Education Writing Achievement Awards. To be eligible, students must be enrolled in any General Education course (except APS, Composition or Quantitative Skills) and submit a paper of five or more pages of non-fiction prose. Content of the papers must be derived substantially from inquiry beyond individual experience and demonstrate control of Standard Written English. The General Education Committee announced that this year's recipients are: Shannon Reisman and Elizabeth Babiarz, for papers written in two sections of Catherine Cardina's class, Contemporary Issues in Health Science. Melissa Mortellaro, for her paper on Sex and Culture, taught by Sharon Jacobson, women's studies. Tamika Miller-Knox, for her paper on Literature and Culture, taught by J. Roger Kurtz, English. Amanda Mason, for her paper written on Native Americans, taught by Margaret Blackman. The recipients will receive a Certificate of Achievement and will
be honored at a luncheon this month. |

The student Earth Sciences Club, advised by Robert Cassie, earth sciences, has been awarded a $250 grant by the Buffalo Association of Professional Geologists (BAPG), one of only two competitive grants made available to student geology clubs as part of the 1997-98 BAPG Student Awards Program. The award will be used to pay the speaker honorarium at next
year's Spaghetti Dinner, an annual function
for interested alumni, students, faculty and friends of the
department; and to maintain the earth science display in the Lennon Hall lobby. |

The COSAC Report that has been circulating on campus, based on myriad focus groups with various constituencies, and whose goal is to help make Brockport a better place to work, will be the focus of a meeting by a subgroup of the Administrative Group on Thursday, May 14. The group will review the report and its many initiatives and discuss how those initiatives may be implemented. At the table from the Administrative Group will be Diane Elliott, professions; Ed Kumar, administrative services; Karla Linn Merrifield, marketing communications; Anne Parsons, Faculty Senate; John Perry, international education/continuing education and distance learning; and President Paul Yu. COSAC team leaders attending will be Betty Drennen, BASC; Connie Graves, enrollment management; Debbie Lamphron, facilities and planning; Phyllis Lista, chemistry and physics; Joani Martin, administrative services; Sue Smithson, admissions; Jackie Thomas, cultural center; and Nina Vicary , student affairs.
