Overview
Our mission is to create self-awareness, build character and self-confidence, and enhance decision-making skills through fun programs and activities that provide girls with direction and tools for growth and success in high school and beyond.
Our staff specializes in providing unique educational and recreational experiences for young people in a safe and highly supervised structured environment. Additionally, we provide mentoring and direction for college students who want to pursue careers in programming and program management.
Due to the mentoring nature of this program, and the desire to customize the experience for each participant, enrollment is limited to a total of 48 girls. Please contact us as soon as possible to check availability, get more information and hold a spot. Final registration deadline is June 22, 2009.
Highlights

Self-awareness 101
An exciting component of The Leadership Academy will be an interactive exercise designed to create positive self-awareness and understanding of others, two important skills for young leaders. Using a unique learning profile designed specifically for students your age, you will gain a better understanding of your own behavior and that of others as one strategy for building effective and collaborative relationships. By recognizing and accepting differences among your peers, you will learn how to use your inner strengths while finding the best in others. In this engaging and enlightening session, you will develop a sense of personal empowerment and self-leadership as you and your friends learn how to work more effectively with each other.
Session Description: Film Case Study – “Labyrinth”
Students will enjoy this interesting and entertaining session on how to use your own personal power and problem-solving skills to overcome adversity. You will spend the afternoon watching the film “Labyrinth” directed by Jim Henson, creator of the Muppets and produced by George Lucas, creator of the Star Wars series. What does a fantasy film have to do with leadership? Well, movies often depict fictional situations that mirror real life. In this film, you'll watch a teenage girl conquer terrifying challenges to achieve something really important – the return of her little brother who has been taken by the Goblin King, played by David Bowie. Throughout the film, you will be asked to think about the challenges you have faced and how you dealt with them. You'll be asked to consider your own goals and how you envision the future. Strong leaders instill confidence and courage in others when times are tough. This film case study will help prepare you for that role.
Session Description: Top Chefs
Aspiring chefs will get to lead their teams through a culinary challenge, assisted by members of Brockport's award-winning dining team in our state of the art display cooking station. Along the way, students will learn some basic kitchen sanitation and cooking skills and gain insight on the importance of diet and nutrition in a healthy lifestyle.

Session Description: Dress up Dinner, Dining Etiquette and the Art of Conversation
After your Spa Session on Friday, it is time for the girls to dress up just a little bit and enjoy a totally grown-up dinner while learning the finer points of table manners and civilized conversation. Taking the old “finishing-school” approach with a contemporary humorous twist, our presenter provides hands-on instruction while the group dines in a more formal setting, practicing with different utensils and glassware. Should an invitation to dinner at the White House arrive in the mail, you will be ready! Students will also learn the “secret” keys to starting and controlling the flow of a conversation at the dinner table. Kids who feel shy and nervous in social situations will leave the table with confidence and never be a “a loss for words” again.
