Overview of Field Instruction for the Baccalaureate Degree in Social Work
The undergraduate Social Work Program requires a senior internship of 440 hours to complete its major. All junior level course work needs to have been completed prior to any placement. The internship requirement can be completed by choosing a domestic or international placement.
1. Domestic placement within the Monroe, Orleans, Genesee, Livingston, Ontario, or Wayne County areas.
- A student may choose to be in placement 2 days/week from September to May (concurrent placement)
- A student may choose to be in placement 4 days/week from September to December or from January to May (block placement-requires a 3.25 gpa)
2. International placement in Costa Rica, Ireland, Puerto Rico or Vietnam
International placements are completed in the Spring semester of a student’s senior year and collaborates with other universities, free standing language schools or with a non-government organization. There are currently four international placements available:
1. Costa Rica-This is an immersion program in which we collaborate with a free standing language school in San Jose to bring your language skills up to the required level needed for a placement. Students live with selected Spanish speaking families to further your immersion experience. Placements are within a hospital setting or with the counter-part of our department of social services under the supervision of masters in social work.
2. Ireland-This is a collaboration with Waterford Institute of Technology that facilitates a placement in agencies serving street children, institutionalized children, the elderly, medical facilities under the supervision of masters level social workers. Students are housed in apartments on the Waterford campus.
3. Puerto Rico-This is a collaboration with University of Humacao an hour outside of San Juan, Puerto Rico. Students attend a seminar and a language course at the university and live in their own apartment off campus. Placements are at local community outreach centers that work with children and families under the supervision of social work faculty.
4. Vietnam– This is a collaboration with a Non-Government Organization, The Danang/Quang Nam Fund, Inc. Students live together in a program house with other students who are studying/working with the NGO. They do weekly visits to the elderly, private homes, homes that service the children affected by the use of Agent Orange, and teach English to residents of Danang. Supervision is provided by a masters level social worker in Brockport.
