The College at Brockport’s Theatre Department and Music Studies is proud to present the FESTIVAL OF TEN VIII – Playwriting Symposium Saturday, March 9th from 1-4:30 pm. This year’s workshop will be led by professional guest playwright Kate Gersten. Currently the Lila Acheson Wallace Playwriting Fellow at the Julliard school under the mentorship of Marsha Norman and Christopher Durang, Ms. Gersten is a two-time recipient of the Lincoln Center Le Comte de Nouy Prize. In addition her play Exposed! The Curious Case of Shiloh and Zahara, which was produced as part of the 2009 Midtown International Theatre Festival and directed by TONY Award winner Dan Fogler, was nominated in 12 festival award categories and won the distinguished honor of Outstanding Playwriting of a New Script.
This four hour intensive is a generative play-writing course centered on the discovery of new story ideas and development of dramatic characters, utilizing your own personal history as a foundation. Complex characters are the driving force of plays, and strong characterization lends a richness to dialogue. This course is intended to help writers develop the skills they need to create three-dimensional, powerful, authentic characters in which the writer has a personal investment and the potential of civic engagement. Mining your experiences and creatively transforming them into drama will help you produce something unique and distinct in terms of voice and point of view, and inspire a writing process which will feel organic and imaginative at the same time. Attendees will be taught a sequence of play-writing exercises designed to open up and explore the notion of “personal experience as inspiration” in a number of fun, exciting and thought provoking ways.
Included in the day’s activities is a welcome reception/lunch and time to meet some of the winning playwrights whose work was chosen to appear in this year’s production, as well as free ticket to attend that evening’s presentation of the Festival of Ten – VIII and an exclusive post-show Q&A session with the actors, directors, and playwrights.
