GARY THOMAS MUSANTE
Technical Director / Lighting Designer
I started working in Theatre during high school. During this period I also worked with our local community theatre, the Sayville Musical Workshop. By the time I was 18 I had worked on 20 full scale productions. Growing up on Long Island allowed me easy access to theatre in New York City and I viewed several Broadway plays while still in high school and attended many more while I was in college. During my summers while in college I had the chance to work off-Broadway in New York, summer stock at Gateway Playhouse and design sets and lights at Airport Playhouse. During my senior year at SUNY Buffalo I served as the lighting coordinator for the concert committee, designing lighting for several rock and jazz productions.
Between college and graduate school I worked for Lycian Stage Lighting. I helped in the manufacturing of stage lights and indexing color wheels. While at the University of Michigan I worked with the local IATSE crews on both Theatre and Rock 'n Roll productions. I also designed the Lighting for a tour of the Michigan Dance Ensemble. After graduate school I worked in several theatres and scene shops in New York City, on Long Island and in New Jersey before coming to SUNY Brockport in 1982.
Since being at Brockport I have continued to work professionally when our busy production schedule has allowed. During this time I have worked on a PBS documentary, several Operas, designed lighting for several local theatres and colleges and have constructed scenery for Geva, the local professional theatre. I have served as the Technical Director for several equity Summer Stock theatres. I have also severed as an informal advisor and resource for many local High School and Community Theatre productions.
I have continued to study, taking several computer classes in AutoCAD and other computer programs. I have attended Master Classes and Profession Development Workshops offered through the United States Institute for Theatre Technology. I am a member of the USITT and its Lighting Commission.
Outside of Theatre I like to travel and collect postal history with a Theatre theme. I am a member of the Western Monroe Philatelic Society.
