Alcohol/Substance Abuse Studies
The Alcohol and Substance Abuse Studies Program (ASAP) may be pursued as a track of the liberal arts program in health science, as a complete set of electives to complement another major, as a complete set of courses for a non-matriculated student or selectively as independent electives. The ASAP courses partially fulfill requirements for the New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS) Credentialed Alcoholism/Substance Abuse Counselor examination. Current CASAC holders may elect to take some or all of these courses to fulfill the continuing education requirements of the credential.I. Students majoring in Alcohol and Substance Abuse Studies are required to complete the following core courses:

This track includes HLS 409, 421, 422, 423, 424, 435, 445, 497, and HLP 498. To complete the health science liberal arts major with a concentration in alcohol/substance abuse studies, students must take the health science liberal arts core courses (mentioned above) along with all of the following Alcohol and Substance Abuse Program courses.
Required Alcohol and Substance Abuse Concentration (30-36 Credits) Credits HLS 409: Introduction to Alcohol & Other Drugs* 3HLS 421: Group Counseling Skills for Alcohol & Other Drugs 3HLS 422: Individual Treatment Planning for Alcohol & Other Drugs 3HLS 423: Theories of Alcohol & Other Drugs 3HLS 424: Counseling for Diverse Populations for Alcohol & Other Drugs 3HLS 435: Evaluation & Assessment of Alcohol & Other Drugs 3HLS 445: Psychopharmacology of Alcohol & Other Drugs** 3HLS 497: Internship Seminar for Alcohol & Other Drugs
(to be taken concurrently with HLP 498) 3HLS 498: Internship for Alcohol & Other Drugs.
(Prerequisites: All other ASAP courses with a grade of "C" or better, a minimum overall Brockport GPA of 2.5, and coordinator's permission) 6-12Total: 30-36* HLS 409 is a prerequisite or corequisite for all other ASAP courses.
** PHS 110 or PSH 112 is a prerequisite for HLS 445.Students matriculated into the Alcohol and Substance Abuse Studies Program (ASAP) after the Fall 2009 semester are required to complete the following courses.

The Department of Health Science has a professional responsibility to deny admission or continuation in any of its undergraduate or graduate programs to any student whose level of performance and/or personal characteristics do not adquately meet academic professional or ethical standards.
