(At left: women volleyball players, circa 1980.) One of the first mentions of volleyball as a sport at Brockport is in the 1945 Saga, where it is mentioned as one of the intramural sports played then. The sport followed the typical progression for women's sports, moving from club to varsity status. In December 1965 the Stylus was running headlines on the "Brockport State Volleyball Honor Team," and the "Lady Spikers," but by December 1966 they were mentioning the "Women's Varsity Volleyball Team," making the team one of the earliest varsity women's sports.Typical of the reports of the team in the early days is the following, extracted from the "Co-Ed Capers" column in the February 24, 1967 issue of the Stylus,
Volleyball Team Victorious The women's volleyball team captured four straight games to complete two victorious matches over Buffalo State... "Cookie" Desino and Phyllis Gleichman sparked the varsity team with fine set-ups, while Peggy McCann was tops in the serving department.
(At left: practice circa 1975.) Gymnastics first appeared at Brockport as a co-ed club in 1964-1965. A few years later comes the first mention of a separate women's team, in the April 14, 1967 Stylus,
Brockport Gymnasts Compete This past weekend, four of the members of the women's gymnastics team and their coach, Miss Lee Miller, traveled to Southern Illinois University to compete... Mureil Decker brought home a silver medal in the Class B vaulting competition (score: 8.8)... There were 17 schools from all over the nation represented, although Brockport was the only school representing New York.

Miss Ruth McDonald, advisor to Brockport's first women's tennis club, has slated competition with Buffalo, Potsdam, St. Lawrence, Cortland and the University of Rochester.Practices are held three nights a week... Top players become eligible to represent Brockport in competition based upon the results of a ladder tournament held prior to each scholastic match.
Four doubles and six singles entries are participating at present... Currently leading in singles are Kathy Scully, Diane Szczerbacki, and Ann Baldwin. Tops in doubles are Ann Keough & Barb Rondeau, and Sadie Scheller & Barb Kern...
The tennis club hopes to establish a winning tradition in this, its first season. Spectator support is welcome!
