Library Instruction
We conduct over 100 course-related
instruction sessions each year, in which faculty members schedule a time to
have a librarian teach their students about the library resources needed for
their work. To schedule such a session, contact Charlie Cowling at 395-5667 or ccowling@brockport.edu, or use the online form. (Charlie is
also the contact if you wish to reserve the Kiefer Room for your own use.)
We meet the SUNY Trustees mandate for
Information Literacy through course related instruction, work with ENL112, and
an online tutorial (http://www.brockport.edu/~library5/guide/.)
Individual Research Consultations
We are glad to offer the opportunity to
schedule n individual consultation with a reference librarian. Whether student,
faculty or staff, and whatever your research needs you'll have our undivided
attention as we help you discover how to best find the information you need.
To initiate a request for an individual
research consultation, please describe as completely as possibly what it is you
need on the request
form.
The primary
purpose of reference work is to assist students and staff engaged in course related
or other academic research. This is the primary purpose for which we maintain
our reference PCs.
- The "logbook." This is a spiral ring bound packet of
paper in which reference desk staff jot down notes concerning current
questions, concerns or problems noted at the desk. If you haven't been on
the desk lately, skim through the last week or two of this to update
yourself on current class activities, PC problems and so on.
- “Cheatsheet Notebook:” This is a black binder with a number of
useful sections concerning various reference desk related issues.
- Class assignment folder. Kept on bookcase behind the librarian's
PC, this contains those current assignments for which we were able to
obtain copies.
Procedures
- Please note on the questions sheet at the desk each question
answered so we can keep our count.
- Note any problems you have in the logbook. For weekend
librarians, if a PC isn't working just shut it down, leave an out of order
sign on it and note it in the log.
- If you are having problems and would like to do so, feel free to
call Charlie Cowling at home 637-0305.
- If I'm not there leave a message and will get back to you.
- Let student workers in at the door to the back hallway – by
acquisitions (NE corner tower) - the students are told to be here 15
minutes before opening.
- Turn on lights (far end of circ on wall - hit all green buttons)
- Unlock the door to the SMC. Also unlock back tower hallway door with
the hex key in white box in Sue Donk's desk, lower left hand drawer.
- Ref area: turn on PCs – don’t turn all 80 – just the first two
clusters, people will turn the others on when they want them. Printers
should be on - we never turn them off. Turn on desk PC - there is a cheat
sheet for the login on the monitor stand.
- Make sure all service areas are covered. If someone doesn't show
up for an area, lock the door, and put up a sign. Behind the librarian's
PC is a folder with schedules for the various library areas - try calling
the student who didn't show - if that doesn't work try calling the next
one to see if they can come in early. If that doesn't work the area will
have to stay closed till the next student does come in. Remember, if it's
busy in the reference area those people come first - call students as you
can.
- Reference desk student assistant: their job is to assist you
with reference and IT questions. They have all been told to check the
printers for paper, neaten things up when time permits… If all that is
done, and it is quiet, they are allowed to do homework etc. at desk, as
long as remain attentive to patrons.
- Closing - during academic year you will not need to do any
closing duties - student ass'ts will do that work after you've left.
- Always feel free to see me with questions about upcoming weekend
reference duty, or with comments after the fact.
