ASSISTANT TO . . . POSITIONS provide a broad range of professional and academic administrative services for a campus or central administration officer. Does related work as required. The specific position responsibility ranges from very generalized administrative tasks of a professional and academic nature to responsibilities of a narrow and specific field that may require advanced education and experience of a specific nature. These positions are primarily in existence to relieve administrative officers of various program aspects. The type and scope of the responsibilities and the complexity of a given position will depend to a large degree on the authority delegated by the administrative officer, the size of the departments office, or program, and the unique educationally-related program of the office. As a representative of a department or office, incumbents of Assistant to . . . positions may be assigned duties relative to academic affairs including research development of academic programs, curricula affairs, academic accreditation, classroom examination and other academic calendar scheduling, assistance in the faculty and student relations and interdepartmental relations, and coordination, business affairs, including preparation of budgets, grant requests, advice to principal research investigators, and control of funded programs, student affairs, including student personnel research, coordination of student assistants, and in some cases, the review of applicants for admissions to specific programs; may be assigned to special studies as requested by the supervisor and may have as part of their responsibilities the administrative supervision of other professional, technical, and clerical personnel assigned to the office or department; may represent the administrative officer on campus and off-campus committees or in meetings with faculty, students, governmental representatives, and members of the general public.

Preferred Qualifications:

The levels of positions in this general series vary widely from Assistant to Chancellor to Assistant to Director. Naturally, qualifications must also vary. While the higher echelons may require a Doctorate degree and both substantial and specific kinds of experience, lower echelons may only require a Bachelor's degree with little or no experience.
