SUNY University-Wide Human Resources Manual
Orientation - Medical Emergencies

last updated: Thursday, July 1, 2004

In accordance with many laws, rules, and regulations related to health and safety, SUNY campuses are required to develop and promulgate procedures to be followed in the event of medical emergencies on their campuses.

Campuses must use their discretion in promulgating these procedures on the campus. However it is accomplished, it is highly recommended that it occur minimally at the commencement of each instructional period. This will ensure that new faculty, staff, and students are advised of these procedures.

Special ambulance vehicles will not be provided through State funds to any college to transport students or staff requiring medical care. The Director of Health Services, a physician, a nurse, or other campus official duly designated by the Director of Health Services (e.g., University Police Officers) must authorize transportation of persons requiring emergency medical care. Scroll to Section 006 after selecting "SUNY Procedures Manual" in the references at the end of this section.

  • If a medical emergency involves an employee, the Human Resources Office should be notified as soon as possible after the emergency has been addressed.

  • NYS has a system for employees to report work-related injuries and work-related illnesses. The new system is called ARS, the Accident Reporting System. Call the ARS toll-free number, 1-888-800-0029 to report a work-related injury or illness 24 hours a day, every day.

  • It the medical emergency involves a work related injury, affected employees, or, in the event that their injuries prevent it, their supervisors, must complete workers' compensation accident reports for the Human Resources Office or the Environmental Health and Safety Office as soon as possible after the event in order to protect these benefits.

See "Medical Emergencies" in the references at the end of this section for a link to Article 28 of the UUP Bargaining Agreement for a sample of medical emergency requirements. Although information at this link refers to employees in the SUNY professional services negotiating unit, the need to periodically promulgate the campus' procedures for handling medical emergencies is important to all employees, students, and campus guests as well.
