Lavender Ceremony

Main Page Content

A Lavender Graduation or Lavender Ceremony is an informal graduation ceremony held by universities to honor and celebrate their LGBTQIA+ students and Allies. This event is not meant to replace commencement, but to compliment it. It is a time to celebrate the student's accomplishments and contributions to the university. The Lavender Ceremony was created by Dr. Ronni Sanlo, a Jewish Lesbian who held the first ceremony at the University of Michigan in 1995. The tradition has since spread to over 200 universities.

Brockport's inaugural Lavender Ceremony will be a celebration for our students who are members or allies of the LGBTQIA+ community and their supporters. Our Ceremony will include Keynote Speaker, Laura Clark, and the presentation of awards. A section of the ceremony will be dedicated to recognizing the graduates who will have the opportunity to walk across the stage and receive a special certificate. We will also be welcoming Alum to participate in our ceremony and Faculty and Staff to support students as they cross the stage. Following the ceremony there will be a reception with refreshments. We hope you will join us for this grand occasion! Sponsored by the Division of Advancement, LGBTQIA+ Faculty/Staff Group, Office of Residential Life/Learning Communities, Brockport PRIDE, Promoting Excellence in Diversity Grant, & Hazen Center for Integrated Care.
