Preferred First Name Process & Form

General Information

The College at Brockport allows students to request that their preferred first name be displayed on their Eagle One ID card.

What is a Preferred First Name?

A preferred first name is one that you choose to be called that is different from your legal or official name of record. We recognize that some use the terminology of "name" or "lived name" over "preferred name", but for now The College uses the word preferred.

What is the purpose of The College at Brockport’s Preferred First Name Process?

The College at Brockport recognizes that some students wish to use a first name other than a legal or official name of record to identify themselves in day-to-day use. As long as the use of this preferred name is not for the purposes of misrepresentation, to avoid legal obligation, or a use of a highly offensive or derogatory name, The College acknowledges that a “preferred name” can and should be used on the Eagle One ID cards of interested students. This process is limited to first names and not surnames or family names. For non-U.S. citizens, the official name of record is the passport name. Also, it is hoped that this opportunity will assist gender variant students with affirming their self-identification. The College extends this accommodation in order to help foster a more welcoming, supportive and respectful campus climate for all of its students.

Students wishing to add a preferred first name, or modify an existing first name, on their Eagle One ID card will use the online Preferred First Name Form.

Upon completing the form, a 5-10 minute meeting can be scheduled either with the Chief Diversity Officer, Dr. Cephas Archie, or with another preferred campus mentor (e.g. professor, counselor, etc.). The meeting will provide follow-up to the online request and allow students to learn of additional resources and support services available at the institution. For students choosing to schedule a meeting, please contact Dr. Archie's secretary at or (585) 395-2024.

After confirmation of a valid request, students can go to the BASC Business Office in Brockway Hall to pick up their new Eagle One ID card free of charge. This accommodation is available due to a partnership between the Office of Diversity and BASC. The preferred first name will appear on the front of the Eagle One ID card.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can anyone update my Preferred First Name?

No. Only you as the student can update your preferred first name.

Can I set my Preferred First Name to whatever I want?

Although students are generally free to determine the preferred names they wish to be known by, inappropriate use of the preferred name policy (including but not limited to avoiding a legal obligation or misrepresentation) may be cause for denying the request. In addition, the College reserves the right to remove a preferred name if it is deemed inappropriate (e.g., is offensive or derogatory), or if used inappropriately.

Where will my Preferred First Name appear?

The front of your Eagle One ID card is the ONLY place your preferred first name will appear. The preferred first name will not be reflected on any other academic records and documents (e.g. Blackboard, Banner, etc.).

How often can I change my Preferred First Name at the College?

Your preferred first name can be changed no more than once an academic year and twice during your tenure at Brockport. However, only one Eagle One ID card per student will be provided free of charge. If a student requests a second preferred first name change they will have to pay a $25 fee for their new Eagle One ID card.

How do I correct or change my Legal/Official Name at the College?

Students who wish to change their official name of record must submit official documentation (e.g., court order, divorce decree) directly to the Office of the Registrar.
