Seventh Festival of Ten Features 10-Minute Plays Chosen from International Search
Performances are February 25, 26, and March 3, 4 and 5.
Brockport, NY – After culling more than 400 submissions received from playwrights located around the globe, The College at Brockport’s Department of Theatre is producing its seventh edition of the Festival of Ten. This program of ten 10-minute plays premieres on Friday, February 25, 2011, at 7:30 in the Tower Fine Arts Center Mainstage, 180 Holley Street, Brockport. Once the eligible plays are registered, they go through a rigorous selection process during which they are read by a panel of adjudicators. After the total is winnowed down to a more manageable 15 – 25 plays, staged readings take place in front of an audience, where further vetting takes place, especially in terms of length. Based on audience reaction at those readings, and further balloting by the adjudicators, the final ten are chosen.
The 10-minute format is more difficult than it might appear. As with any play, the piece needs to have a beginning, a middle and an end. With less time to develop characters, the playwright is automatically challenged, as are the actors and directors, who are trying to convey the playwright’s intention.
P. Gibson Ralph, chair of the Department of Theatre, explains “the academic training we give our actors and student directors, and the rehearsal process, allows them – and the playwrights – to continue to discover the nuances of the particular play.” When the Festival of Ten first began in 1999, Ralph continued, “we were the only festival of its kind in the area, and we were – and continue to be – a resource much appreciated by regional playwrights, who are able to see their works fully-staged, sometimes for the first time.”
Performances of Festival of Ten are February 25, 26, and March 3, 4 and 5, at 7:30 pm. There is also a matinee on Sunday, February 27 at 2 pm, which will be sign language interpreted for the hearing impaired. Tickets for Festival of Ten are $15/General, $10/Seniors and College at Brockport Alumni, Faculty and Staff, and $8/Students and are available by phone at (585) 395-ARTS or at the Tower Fine Arts Center Box Office.
