Clyde Morgan, African Dance Specialist, Announces Retirement from The College at Brockport

The Department of Dance will honor Morgan at an upcoming Sankofa Banquet on Sunday, May 3, from 4:30 – 8 pm in the Seymour Union Ballroom

Brockport, NY — Clyde Alafiju Morgan, associate professor and artistic director of Sankofa African Dance and Drum Ensemble in the Department of Dance at The College at Brockport, has announced his retirement at the end of this academic year.

To celebrate his legacy, the Department of Dance will honor Morgan at an upcoming Sankofa Banquet on Sunday, May 3, from 4:30 – 8 pm in the Seymour Union Ballroom. The event immediately follows the Sunday matinee performance of Sankofa African Dance and Drum Ensemble. As part of the festivities, Kevin Warner, Chair of the Department of Dance, will lead an interview with Morgan about his early days in dance, as well as about the contributions of Sankofa to multiculturalism and diversity at The College at Brockport. Clyde Alafiju Morgan is a native of Cincinnati, OH, and a graduate of Cleveland State University. After two years of graduate work in dance at Bennington College, he made his professional debut with the José Limón Dance Company. His professional studies in New York include work with Merce Cunningham, the New Dance Group, Robert Joffrey, Paul Sanasardo, and the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo. He has appeared as a soloist in the companies of Babatunde Olatunji, Sophie Maslow, Daniel Nagrin, Louis Falco, Pearl Lang and Anna Sokolow. The second phase of his career saw him working as a choreographer and artistic director in Brazil. He then taught at the University of Wisconsin while continuing to teach and perform in Europe, Haiti, Brazil and West Africa.

Morgan’s work in the Department of Dance at Brockport will have spanned 27 years at the end of this year. During his time at Brockport, Morgan, along with Sankofa music director Khalid Saleem, were responsible for transforming an existing student-run African dance club and building it into what we now know as Sankofa. At its height, Sankofa performed continuously at multiple regional,state and local venues and schools, and did residency work throughout the area. Sankofa’s reputation for enhancing and promoting diversity on our campus and in our community continues today, with recent performances at Academic Convocation, the Governor’s Martin Luther King Day celebration in Albany, the International Festival, Rochester’s Greentopia Festival and other events throughout the Northeast.
