Distinguished Brockport Alumnus Makes Major Gift to College
$1.25 million gift will support Brockport students and faculty
BROCKPORT, NY— One of the nation’s leaders in the field of information security and public policy has committed to providing a variety of financial support to The College at Brockport. This gift by Dr. Eugene H. Spafford ’79 provides for both student and faculty support along with an annual lecture. The total amount of the gift will eventually exceed $1.25 million.
“I’ve been an educator all of my life,” says Spafford, a Rochester native who currently resides in West Lafayette, IN. “I know the value of education, and I wanted to give back to both those who are in need of education and those who provide it.”
The Eugene H. Spafford Fund will provide annual awards for top computer science scholars as well as additional support for faculty development activities for which there is no other designated funding. “As a faculty member, there have been many times where I've wanted to do something that would provide some professional enhancement,” he says. “So, I wanted to be sure there was something in this fund to help Brockport faculty grow in what they do in their ability to serve the community.”
“This gift speaks volumes about Spaf’s love for his alma mater and how much Brockport has meant in the development of his distinguished career,” says Mike Andriatch, vice president for advancement and president of the Brockport Foundation. “The impact of this support will be felt for generations.”
The new fund also will provide for one visitor per year to provide a distinguished lecture. Eventually, the fund will offer scholarships for students studying in a STEM or Liberal Arts discipline.
“Much of my success in my career has come about because of the initial opportunities I was given at Brockport,” says Spafford. “I know how many people have gotten their start there, so I thought this would be a really good match.”
Dr. Spafford earned his undergraduate degree from the College in mathematics and computer science. He then went on to receive a master’s and doctorate in information and computer science from the Georgia Institute of Technology. Since 1987, he has been a faculty member at Purdue University in its computer science department.
Dr. Spafford has been honored with virtually every award available in cyber security; he is one of only two people to receive all three of the National Computer Security Awards, be inducted into the Cyber Security Hall of Fame, and receive the Hal Tipton Award. Dr. Spafford has received every major award at Purdue University for teaching and many major awards for distinguished service to the computing community, including the Computing Research Association Distinguished Service Award. He is the founder and executive director of the Center for Education and Research in Information Assurance and Security (CERIAS), a university-wide institute drawing on expertise and research across many of the academic disciplines at Purdue.
Former classmates and friends of Dr. Spafford are invited to add to this fund at any time.
Spafford was honored by the Brockport Alumni Association in 2003 with the Hall of Heritage Award, the Association’s most prestigious award.
