Brockport Set to Salute Class of 2016

Three ceremonies will be held between May 13-14 to celebrate newest graduating class

BROCKPORT, NY—More than 2,500 College at Brockport students will transition into the ranks of the College’s alumni this weekend. Brockport will confer degrees in three separate ceremonies May 13-14 in the Special Events Recreation Center.

Commencement weekend kicks off at 5 pm on Friday, May 13 with the Graduate Commencement Ceremony. Leonard Brock ’03/’05, the executive director of the Rochester-Monroe Anti-Poverty Initiative, will address the graduates. The initiative is a joint effort between city, county and state government to tackle poverty in our community. Previously, Brock has held several leadership positions in the community. He has worked with The Community Place of Greater Rochester and The Children’s Agenda, a nonpartisan research and advocacy organization. He most recently served as alliance director for ROC the Future.

Two undergraduate ceremonies will take place on Saturday, May 14. The morning ceremony, for students in the School of Health and Human Performance and the School of Science and Mathematics, takes place at 9:30 am. The afternoon ceremony, for students from the Schools of the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences; Business Administration and Economics; and Education and Human Services, will begin at 2 pm.

The undergraduates will hear from Joey Jackson ’88, a nationally recognized criminal defense attorney and a CNN/HLN legal analyst. After a stint as an assistant district attorney under Robert Morgenthau, Jackson joined the firm of Koehler & Isaacs LLP, where he serves as senior trial counsel specializing in criminal defense and labor and employment. During his time at Brockport, Jackson participated in the Honors College and served as student body president.
