Brockport Hosts Week-long Sports Camp for Children with Visual Impairments
Camp Abilities Brockport returns to campus June 27 through July 2
BROCKPORT, NY—A whole new world of possibilities will be opened to 55 children with visual impairments next week. Camp Abilities Brockport, a one-week developmental sports camp for children with visual impairments, returns to The College at Brockport campus June 27.
They will ride bikes, play baseball, swim, run track, rollerblade, stand-up paddleboard on the Erie Canal, do gymnastics, and much more. This year, for the first time, they’ll even sail on Lake Ontario. They’ll be doing it all under the watchful eye of students and faculty from Brockport’s adapted physical education program, which teaches its students how to make sports and physical activity a part of everyone’s life—no matter what their physical challenges may be. Each activity is specially modified to enable people with visual impairments to participate.
The camp also serves as a valuable research opportunity for academics who specialize in the field of adapted physical education. Researchers from Vanderbilt University, University of South Carolina, and SUNY Cortland will be visiting this year’s camp.
