Undergraduate Commencement Ceremony celebrates the next Brockport alumni
BROCKPORT, NY—The College at Brockport, State University of New York, boasts more than 1,500 new alumni following two undergraduate commencement ceremonies on May 13.
Lauren Dixon, the chief executive officer of Dixon Schwabl, delivered the commencement address during both ceremonies. Dixon oversees a full-service marketing communications firm. Her agency’s culture and leadership have been recognized with national awards including being named one of the “Best Small Companies to Work for in America” for 15 consecutive years, ranking No. 1 twice.
Dixon spoke to the graduates about passion: what it means, how to find it, and why it’s so important.
“What’s your pants on fire passion,” she asked the graduates. “It’s what you think about all of the time. It’s what makes you smile during the day. It’s what intrigues you, what inspires you. What makes you do a happy dance from time to time. Today, you may think it could be a job, or maybe not. When you’ve identified your passion, it is not a job. When you’ve discovered your passion, you will never once look at your watch at work.”
She offered the graduates some advice: set audacious goals; don’t let ‘no’ stand in your way; if you’re starting a business, hire people much smarter than you; seek and embrace change; exceed expectations; make shared core goals a priority; and, give back.
Brockport President Heidi Macpherson informed the audience of the impact that the Class of 2017 has already made at Brockport and beyond. She spoke of student efforts to facilitate discussions about equity, diversity, and inclusion. She spoke of the student leadership ceremony students organized, which had more than 300 students in attendance. And she spoke about service learning that has taken place throughout the area.
“Our students strive to have a learn and engage culture and they actively participate in making the College a better place,” Macpherson said. "Community, engagement, excellence and transformation: the four values of our strategic plan are embodied over and over by our students."
