Syncopated Rhythms Jump Start 2007-08 SUNY Brockport Performing Arts Series
Brockport, NY – After appearing at the last three Rochester International Jazz Festivals, the Rochester Metropolitan Jazz Orchestra will bring their big band sound to the campus of SUNY College at Brockport. Their concert, part of the SUNY Brockport Homecoming Weekend, takes place at 7:30 pm on Saturday, September 15 at Tower Fine Arts Center, 180 Holley Street.
During the concert, the Orchestra will perform big band favorites from Count Basie and Duke Ellington, dance band music, Latin, and other staples of the jazz repertoire, under the direction of noted Rochester musician Ron Bowks. Vocalist Maggie Mullen will also be on hand to wrap her vocal stylings around music from composers such as Burt Bacharach and Rodgers & Hart.
Founded in 1998 with noted local jazz composer, Dave Rivello, the 19-piece orchestra continues to perform jazz in the tradition of the Count Basie Orchestra. About their most recent appearance at the Rochester International Jazz Festival, the Democrat and Chronicle said “[t]heir sound was big, brassy and comforting… it was ‘good-to-be-alive’ music.”
Tickets for the concert are $12/General, $10/Seniors and $8/Students and are available by phone at (585) 395-ARTS or at the Tower Fine Arts Center Box Office. Tickets can also be obtained at all area Wegmans supermarkets.
