Course Requirements in the Sophomore Year

First Semester Second Semester
  •  SOC 200
  • SOC 210, SOC 220, SOC 230 or SOC 240

Prerequisite Courses

  • SOC 100 is prerequisite for 300 and 400 level courses.
  • SOC 200 Social Statistics is a prerequisite for SOC 310 Methods of Sociological Research.

Further Recommendations

Because the core courses—SOC 200, SOC 300 (Sociological Theory), and SOC 310 (Methods of Sociological Research)—are challenging and require a C or better for the major, we recommend that students not take two of them together in any given semester. Also, because some students need to attempt the core courses multiple times, they should not postpone them to their final semester.

Transfer students should take SOC 200 right away if they have not already taken it or an equivalent. Also, if they have completed 2-3 additional sociology courses, they can sign up for SOC 300. If they have completed only the introductory course, it is better to take other 200- and 300-level classes to become more familiar with Sociology before signing up for SOC 300.

Students should note that two core courses SOC 300 and SOC 310 are not offered online or at night. Thus, students with major scheduling constraints should plan for one or more semesters in which they can take core required courses meeting mid-day.
