Description

A 12-credit hour certificate program for those who already hold a master’s degree in school counseling.  Requires online core courses and electives, as well as classroom electives.

The purpose of this program is to develop the school counselor’s advanced skills in diagnosis, consultation and family systems counseling.  Students applying for this program must have successfully completed a master’s degree in School Counseling in order to be eligible for the School Counselor advanced certificate.  The core of this program develops the student’s skills in diagnosis and in systems approaches to counseling.  Students then choose 2 additional elective courses.  The elective courses include two online courses (allowing students to create a completely online program) and three classroom practicum courses (that allow students to develop additional hands-on skills in the classroom if they so wish).

Admission to the Program

The application process is managed by the Graduate School, and application materials are available online. The application process includes:

  1. an online graduate application with the student's written objective for entering the program;
  2. all undergraduate and graduate transcripts; and
  3. three letters of recommendation (from an employer, a professor, and a character reference).

Applicants must have a master's degree in counseling.

Students must meet the College's standards for graduate study.

  • EDC616: Diagnostic Skills for Counselors – 3 credits
  • EDC690: Couples and Family Counseling – 3 credits

Total: 12 credits

Certification

Students who complete this program are eligible for the College’s recommendation for New York State permanent certification. Program completion and submission of the recommendation request form are also required to secure the College’s recommendation. Additional New York state certification requirements must be satisfied to earn certification. Students are advised to consult the Brockport Certification Office.
