The teacher education program leads to "initial certification" to teach physical education in grades PreK-12 in New York State. To obtain "professional certification" students must earn a master’s degree within five years of initial certification. This program also certifies successful candidates to coach in New York. Depending on how students meet requirements in General Education, the academic major in physical education, and in teacher certification, it may take more than 120 credits to complete this program. Careful advisement is important for timely graduation.
Admission to the Program
Students who pursue the physical education teacher education major can declare their intent to major at admission to the College. Acceptance into the major requires all of the following:
- a completed application form
- a minimum 2.5 GPA at Brockport, including at least 12 credits of work at Brockport, of which no more than 3 credits can be from either the required Activity/Skill Courses listed below or PES 3xx Advanced Performance.
- a minimum of 45 college credits
Students who successfully complete these requirements are admitted to the physical education teacher education major and are eligible to take PEP 441.
Students in the physical education teacher education major pursue a Bachelor of Science degree and must complete its requirements.

Required Professional Sequence (41 credits)
Full-time students typically complete the professional sequence in four semesters as follows:

- PEP 441, PEP 442 and PEP 444 contain a field experience component, each of which requires a separate application.
- Prior to Student Teaching, students must complete all the following:
- at least 108 credits prior to student teaching
- all General Education requirements
- Completion of all other physical education major requirements
- 2.0 GPA in the physical education major (transfer courses do not count in GPA calculation)
- a grade of "C" or higher in all other professional sequence courses
- a grade of "C" or higher in all activity/skill courses
- a grade of "C" or higher in all electives
- the health-related physical fitness test
- a student teaching application
- an overall Brockport GPA of 2.5 or higher
- a current, state-approved First Aid (including AED training) and CPR certification

Adapted Physical Education Concentration (optional)
The concentration in adapted physical education further prepares the student for any position in the field of physical education teacher education. The concentration in adapted physical education prepares the student to work with all children in any setting. Further, the concentration provides a well rounded background for graduate study in adapted physical education and offers elective opportunities for physical education majors.
The adapted physical education concentration is open to any major in physical education and who has successfully completed PEP 441.
The concentration is completed in conjunction with the physical education teacher education major and requires 12 credits of adapted physical education classes. Five of the 12 credits can be applied to the physical education major elective pool. PEP 485 (Practicum in APE) can be waived if at least 50 percent of the 10-credit student teaching requirement for teacher certification involves classes with pupils with unique physical education needs.
Adapted Physical Education Required Courses
Remaining credits for the degree are determined by working with their academic advisor.
Students who complete this program are eligible for the College’s recommendation for New York State certification. Program completion and submission of the recommendation request form are also required to secure the College’s recommendation. Additional New York state certification requirements must be satisfied to earn certification. Students are advised to consult the Brockport Certification Office.
