Description

At The College at Brockport, the graduate program in physical education provides an opportunity to gain professional certification to teach physical education for students who are eligible for initial certification in physical education. This can be accomplished through study in adapted physical education, athletic administration or pedagogy. Students who are ineligible for initial certification in physical education may pursue the athletic administration concentration (non-certification). The graduate program provides candidates with the opportunity to acquire skills and knowledge related to the field of physical education that can contribute to a variety of personal, professional or academic needs. Upon successful completion of the program, students are awarded a MSEd in Physical Education.

Admission to the Program

Matriculation into the graduate program depends on several factors. Minimum standards for admission include:

  1. a bachelor's degree
  2. for certification emphasis: students must be eligible for initial teacher certification in physical education
  3. for the non-certification emphasis in athletic administration: applicants are prepared to work in areas outside the Pre K-12 school-based environment and are not required to have an undergradute major in physical education
  4. for the non-certification emphasis in adapted physical education: applicants must demonstrate a relevant knowledge base, including, at minimum, 12 credits in the professional field of physical education
  5. GPA requirements:
    1. Students with a cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.0 and above will be eligible for regular admission into this program.
    2. Students with a cumulative undergraduate GPA of between 2.5 and 2.999 may be recommended for conditional admission. Students granted conditional admission must successfully fulfill a conditional contract established by an advisor.
    3. Students with an undergraduate GPA below 2.5 are ineligible for admission.

Program Requirements

Students must meet the College's standards for graduate study.

The MSEd in Physical Education requires at least 30 credits of coursework.

Core Requirements (9-12 credits)

  • PES 604 Research and Evaluation

In addition to the core, students in the program pursue one of the following concentrations:

Concentration: Adapted Physical Education (15 credits)

  • PES 581 Instructional Strategies in Adapted Physical Education
  • PES 582 Adapted Physical Activity and Sport
  • PES 683 Program Development in Adapted Physical Education
  • PES 686 Consultation in Adapted Physical Education

Notes:

  1. Students in this concentration may need to take graduate elective courses by advisement to meet the 30-credit requirement.
  2. Students who have completed one or both of PEP 481/482 at Brockport cannot also receive Brockport credit for the corresponding courses PEP 581/582; in lieu of PEP 581/582, additional elective credits are needed to reach the 30-credit requirement.
  3. Students on funded grants are required to take PES 682 Low Incidence Disabilities.

Concentration: Athletic Administration with Certification (21 credits)

  • PES 590 Administration and Supervision of Physical Education and Athletics
  • PES 601 Analysis of Teaching Physical Education
  • PES 607 Curriculum Design in Physical Education
  • PES 690 Problems in Physical Education and Athletic Administration
  • PES 691 Marketing and Fundraising in Physical Education and Sport
  • PES 692 Budgeting, Finance and Facility Management in Physical Education and Sport
  • PES 791 Internship in Athletic Administration

Concentration: Athletic Administration without Certification (18 credits)

  • PES 552 The Challenges of Coaching
  • PES 590 Administration and Supervision of Physical Education and Athletics
  • PES 690 Problems in Physical Education and Athletic Administration
  • PES 691 Marketing and Fundraising in Physical Education and Sport
  • PES 692 Budgeting, Finance and Facility Management in Physical Education and Sport
  • PES 791 Internship in Athletic Administration

Concentration: Teacher Education/Pedagogy (12 credits)

  • PES 601 Analysis of Teaching Physical Education

  • PES 614 Behavior Management in Physical Education
  • PES 617 Seminar in Physical Education

Note: students in this concentration take at least two graduate elective courses by advisement to meet the 30 credit requirement.

Student Learning Outcomes
