Description
The College offers classes in Applied Music, Music Theory, Music History and Music Appreciation, both to fulfill a Music Minor and General Education requirements. Interested students may also participate in music ensembles for credit or non-credit.
Music classes and the music minor are offered by the Department of Theatre and Music Studies.
Admission to the Music Minor
For admission to the music minor program, students successfully complete MUS 105 Introduction to Music or complete MUS 105 through Credit by Examination.
Requirements of the Music Minor
The minor in music consists of 18 credits. 9 of the 18 credits must be taken at SUNY Brockport. Required courses as follows:
- Theory Courses (6 credits)
- MUS 305 Theory I
- MUS 306 Theory II
- Music History (6 credits)
- ONE of the following courses:
- MUS 112 World Music
- MUS 211 Music Appreciation
- THREE credits (typically ONE course) from:
- MUS 208 Music and Healing (“F” course)
- MUS 303 Intro to Audio Recording Technology
- MUS 308/ANT 308 Intro to Ethnomusicology
- MUS 310 Mediterranean Music
- MUS 335 Class Piano III
- MUS 401 Films & Film Music of India
- MUS 412 History of Rock and Popular Music in America
- MUS 414 American Musical Theatre
- MUS 475 Contemporary Social Issues in Music

- MUS 399 Independent Study (with approval of instructor)

Note: Music minors must participate in an ensemble for a minimum of two semesters. Maximum amount of credit for ensemble participation that can be applied to the minor is two credits. Students may take as many ensembles as they wish. Students may also participate in ensembles for no credit.
