Students are positioned for a variety of careers in a rapidly growing and increasingly important field.

Traditional Biology is moving into molecular events in living systems, using descriptors such as molecular biology, molecular genetics, molecular physiology, molecular ecology. Traditional chemistry is moving into biological systems and chemistry departments are adopting names such as “Chemistry and Chemical Biology.” As with all the science disciplines your major in Biochemistry opens doors to many kinds of jobs and to a deeper understanding of the world around us. You will learn from a dedicated and experienced faculty. Their award winning teaching brings difficult concepts to life and examines the practical applications of Biochemistry in ways that are easy to digest, and they stand ready to assist you to reach your maximum level of success.

The Biochemistry Major, and was approved in 2009-2010. This major grew out of the former Biochemistry track in the Chemistry Department. We have developed it in consultation with the Biology faculty and it draws heavily on both Biology and Chemistry.

Biochemists study the chemistry of living systems from the smallest viruses to great whales and from phytoplankton to the giant sequoia.

Biochemists work in fields as varied as

  • Basic biochemistry
  • Chemical biology
  • Nutrition
  • Molecular basis of diseases
  • Pharmaceuticals, and
  • Neuroscience

Biochemistry is a new major, but graduates of our former Biochemistry track have gone on to careers in basic research in academic, industry and government laboratories, in the pharmaceutical industry, in forensic science, in intellectual property law, in teaching at the high school and at the university level, and to graduate studies in biochemistry, related science disciplines, medicine, dentistry, or veterinary medicine at top universities.

Major Requirements

The academic requirements for a major in chemistry are determined by the date at which a student matriculates (begins study toward a degree) at the College. The most current requirements can be found in the Undergraduate Studies Catalog.

May substitute the physical Chemistry sequence, consisting of CHM405-406 Physical Chemistry I and II and CHM408-409 Physical Chemistry Laboratory I and II. Since MTH203, Calculus III is a pre-requisite for CHM405, this option would increase the total credits for the major to 81.
